DOROTHY TYLER MBE 1920 - 2014 -

We regret to report the death of Dorothy Tyler on 25th September 2014. Dorothy had been unwell for some time and had moved from her home in Sanderstead to live near one of sons.
She reached the highest levels in her athletic career which was also notable for its longevity. Dorothy Odam joined Mitcham AC as a young girl and at the age of sixteen won the silver medal for the High Jump in the Berlin Olympic Games a feat she repeated in 1948 at London by which time she was Dorothy Tyler with a husband, who survives her, and two sons. She also competed in the 1952 & 1956 Olympics - a rare spread of 20 years. She represented England in the British Empire Games (now the Commonwealth Games) in 1938 (Sydney), 1950 (Auckland) and 1954 (Vancouver) where, at various times, she contested the Javelin, 80 metres Hurdles and Long Jump in addition to the High Jump. Her profile lists many of her athletic performances amongst which are her 9 national outdoor titles stretching from 1936 to 1956. (NOTE. If anyone has details of missing preformances prior to 1970 then please contact Webmaster so that we can complete her record.) She regularly contested Surrey Championships over these 20 years and was elected president of Surrey County Womens AAA in 1964. She remained loyal to Mitcham AC and competed for them from the 1930s through to the 1960s and became their president. She was awarded the MBE in 2002.

We do not yet have any information regarding funeral arrangements.

He represented Surrey at 3000m Steeplechase in the 1975 CAU Inter-Counties and was county 1500m champion in 1974, 1975 & 1976. He won the AAA Indoor 1500m title in 1974. He competed in the first London Marathon where his time was 2:29:58.
Clive was born in Wales and won the Welsh 1500m title in 1973. Whilst he was a teacher at Stockwell Manor School he discovered a rare talent in Wayne Tarquini who, as a member of Herne Hill Harriers, won the AAA Youth 800 metres in 1973. Both athletes were coached by Frank Horwill. Clive is remembered by the Hercules Wimbledon middle-distance runners as he used to train from Lauriston on Sunday mornings. Later, Clive and his wife Angela moved to Somerset when he took up a teaching post at Millfield School. He became a well-respected coach at Wells City Harriers.

SURREY COUNTY DISABILITY CHAMPIONSHIPS, KINGSMEADOW, 5TH/6TH APRIL 2014 - RESULTS (15k MS Excel xlsx).

GERRY NORTH 1936 - 2014 - Cross country international Gerry North sadly died in Portsmouth at 11.15 pm on 1 April 2014, aged 77, after a long illness.
His early career was with Blackpool & Fylde AC and Lancashire. Gerry and his younger brother Geoff moved south to London in 1962 and joined Belgrave Harriers. Whilst Geoff retained his Lancashire affiliation, Gerry, who worked as a salesman and was an agent for Asics Tiger running shoes, quickly set about winning Surrey titles on the track and country from 3 miles upwards. Gerry's best times included 14:06.1 for 5000 metres; 28:08.4 for 6 miles, 29:21.0 for 10,000 metres, and 48:38.2 for 10 miles on the track. Profile.
In his later years Gerry moved further south to Portsmouth where he took up coaching and organised many road races, including the prestigious Victory 5 Miles event. He leaves two sons David (14:37.6 for 5000m) and Andy (14:55.8) who also inherited his ability to race well over the country.
Gerry North was a gentle, approachable character who was very popular with his all distance running rivals in Britain and the county, and he will be sadly missed.

SIR CHRIS CHATAWAY 1931 - 2014 - We regret to report the death of Chris Chataway, aged 82, after suffering from cancer for two and a half years. There will be many accounts of his illustrious career as an international athlete and world record holder in the national media. His profile shows third places as a Junior Man in the County 880 yards final in 1949 and the County Cross-Country Championship in 1950. He won the County Senior Mile Championship in 1950.

The large number of finishers in both of the Senior races has raised the question of whether these were the highest ever. We have gone through our archives which, although not complete, include results back to 1922-23 for the Men and 1966-67 for the Women and found the following largest number of finishers for each age group or their historical equivalent:-

  SM U20M U17M U15B

U13B

No of finishers 247 70 98 158 126
Season 2013-14 1960-61 1960-61 1961-62

1976-77

  SW U20W U17W U15G

U13G

No of finishers 149 14 36 74 80
Season 2013-14 2010-11 1967-68 1971-72 1980-81
This would suggest that the Senior races were the largest ever. The previous highest were 240 for the Men in 1990-91 and 143 for the Women in 2011-12.
