KEN CROOKE 1928 - 2015 - It is with regret that we have to report that Ken died on 8th December 2015. He was elected president of the County Association in 2010 having previously been Treasurer. Ken's passion was Cross-Country and he held senior positions in the English Cross-Country Association, South of Thames Cross-Country Association and the East Surrey League. He was also the key person for many years in the cross-country activities of his club, Croydon Harriers. Profile.
SURREY SPORTS AWARDS 2015 - The Surrey Sports Awards for 2015 were presented on 2nd December 2015.
The winner of the Young Sports Personality of the Year Award was Sophie Mace of Walton AC. She was the top ranked U17 women's discus thrower in the UK, last year, having won the English Schools, England U20, South of England U17 and Surrey County Championships. She was also ranked third in the hammer and fourth in the shot for her age group.
The winner of the Sports Personality of the Year Award was Lily Partridge of Aldershot, Farnham & District AC. In 2015 Lily won the CAU Inter-County and the National Cross-Country titles. She also represented Great Britain on the track in the European Team Championhsips.

SURREY U13/U15 SPORTSHALL, SPECTRUM, GUILDFORD, 22ND NOVEMBER 2015 - RESULTS (revised 15/12/2015).
EUROPEAN CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, HYERES, FRANCE, 13TH DECEMBER 2015
Results:- Senior Men 56th Jonny Hay (AFD) and Under-23 Men 25th Henry Pearce (Tonbridge). The SM team was 3rd and the U23M team was 2nd.
SEAA INTER-COUNTY CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, SHUTTLEWORTH PARK, BIGGLESWADE, 12TH DECEMBER 2015 - RESULTS.
UNDER-15 GIRLS, UNDER-13 BOYS & SENIOR WOMEN TEAMS ALL CAME FIRST. UNDER-15 BOYS TEAM WAS SECOND.
Harley Norman (E&E) won the U13 Boys race. Steph McCall (SLH) finished 2nd in the SW race and was the first U23 finisher.
Claudia Lance Jones (G&G) in the U15G and Max Heyden (AFD) in the U15B were both 3rd.

MISSING MALLET - Dorking & Mole Valley AC used a mallet to put up their club flag at the Bruce Judd Relays on the 24th October. When they came to put everything away at the end of the meeting the mallet was missing. If anyone has found a black plastic mallet they are requested to contact DMV.
ENGLAND ATHLETICS LONDON REGION 2015 VOLUNTEER AWARDS - We congratulate Bridget Yule and Phillip Kissi on their awards as Volunteer of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively.
Bridget became involved with the sport, as many parents do, following her son joining Herne Hill Harriers where she became their Young Athletes Team Manager.Subsequently she took on the role of Administrator with the Lonon Schools AA. Many of our athletes who attend schools in Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth will have noted her involvement with London schools teams and championships.
Phillip also became involved through his son but moved into coaching where he has achieved much success. He coaches athletes with a wide range of abilities including Katy-Ann McDonald.
DOROTHY TYLER - Mike Fleet has written a book on the life of Dorothy Tyler, one of Surrey's most accomplished athletes. Mike spent a lot of time with Dorothy in her latter years and was able to obtain many photographs and documents from her to illustrate her career. The book is entitled Thanks And No Thanks Mr Hitler: The Dorothy Odam-Tyler Story and it costs £10 by personal collection from Mike.
BRUCE JUDD YOUNG ATHLETES CROSS-COUNTRY RELAYS (SURREY COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS), STOKE PARK, GUILDFORD, 24TH OCTOBER 2015 - RESULTS + PHOTOS.
2016 AGE GROUPS AND COUNTY TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP DATES. - UKA have announced that there will be no changes to the age group definitions for 2016. UKA have also set the dates for County Championships for 2016 as 14/15 May (ie 2 weeks earlier than the equivalent date in 2015) - this is in opposition to the view held by Surrey County AA.
Although the 2016 Rule Book has not yet been finalised it is proposed to include a rule that all participants in track & field competition held under UKA rules will need to be registered with their national association (eg England Athletics). Details of the proposals can be found on the UKA website and responses have to be made by 11 November 2015.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS COMBINED EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEDFORD, 19/20 SEPTEMBER 2015 - Congratulations to Pippa Earley (Kingston AC & Polytechnic H) who set a Surrey County Under-15 record when winning the Junior Girls Pentathlon with a score of 3462pts. This beat the previous record of 3348pts set by Shirin Irving (Croydon H) in 2011.

KEN BEST MBE - It is with regret that we have to announce the passing of our Past President Ken Best at the age of 91.
Before moving to Horsham, after retiring, he was, for many years, a stalwart with the Surrey Walking Club and Civil Service association.

SURREY UNDER-15 BOYS HAMMER RECORD - Competing at the Crawley AC Open on 31st August 2015 starting at 12:15pm, Sam Mace (Walton AC) set a new record for the Under-15 Boys 4kg Hammer Throw of 59.87m. Competing at the Tonbridge AC Open Meeting on 31st August 2015 starting at 3pm, James Lancaster (Blackheath & Bromley) threw the Under-15 Boys 4kg Hammer a distance of 59.20m. Both throws were an improvement upon the previous record of 57.68m which was set by Sam at the English Schools Championships in July 2015. Given the timings of the events, Sam never lost his position as Surrey record holder. Surrey U15B Track & Field Records.

SURREY COUNTY 10,000M TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS, TOOTING BEC, 29TH AUGUST 2015 - RESULTS.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS UNDER-15 & UNDER-17 CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEDFORD, 29/30 AUGUST 2015 - Top 3 placings by Surrey athletes.
TED CHAPPELL - Ted passed away peacefully on August 15th at 92 - a great innings. Many people have reason to be grateful to Ted. He was made a Life Member of the Surrey County Athletic Association in recognition of his service to county athletes. Ted was a masseur for the British team. Athletes used to go to his home in Motspur Park where he treated them for no charge.
Funeral will take place at 1pm, 11th September at All Saints Church, Freshwater, IOW followed by a service at the Crematorium at 2.15. No black ties, club colours fine. No flowers but donations in lieu to the Ryde Arena, Ted's long passion for ice hockey.

On Saturday, 29th August the IAAF held some Masters events. In the Women's W50 400m Sally Read-Cayton (Reigate Priory) won with a time of 60.05 and Virginia Mitchell (Guildford & Godalming) came second with a time of 60.81.
Martyn Rooney set a new Surrey record in the heats of the 400m. His time of 44.45 was an improvement on the previous record of 44.60 which he set set in Beijing at the 2008 Olympic Games. Surrey SM Track & Field Records.

SURREY SENIOR WOMEN HAMMER RECORD - Competing at the Southern Athletics League Meeting on 15th August 2015 at Kingsmeadow, Pippa Wingate (Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers) set a new record for the 4kg Hammer Throw of 57.03m. This was an improvement upon the previous record of 56.64m which she set in June 2015. Then on 23rd August 2015 at the St. Mary's Richmond Open meeting held at Twickenham she improved the record again with a throw of 58.69m. Surrey SW Track & Field Records.

SEAA UNDER-15 & UNDER-20 INTER-COUNTY TRACK & FIELD, ALLIANZ PARK, HENDON, SUNDAY, 23RD AUGUST 2015 - RESULTS.

SURREY UNDER-17 WOMEN DISCUS RECORD - Competing at the South of England Under-15 & Under-17 Championships held on 15/16 August 2015 at Ashford, Sophie Mace (Walton AC) set a new record for the 1kg Discus Throw of 47.35m. The previous record of 45.72m was set in 1990 by Sarah Winckless (Epsom & Ewell) who subsequently represented Great Britain at the Olympics as a rower. Surrey U17W Track & Field Records.

SURREY UNDER-17 WOMEN HAMMER RECORD - Competing at the London Inter-Club Challenge Meeting held on 1st August 2015 at Hendon, Sophie Mace (Walton AC) set a new record for the 3kg Hammer Throw of 54.37m. UNDER-13 INTER-COUNTY TRACK & FIELD, KINGSMEADOW, SUNDAY, 26TH JULY 2015 - FULL RESULTS. Surrey performances.
Congratulations to the U13 girl's Surrey team for winning the U13 Inter-Counties match on Sunday, 26 July and to the boys team for their second place. A very close competition for all the teams. I would also like to say congratulations to the team managers for all their hard work with the two teams. Very well done.

EUROPEAN JUNIOR (UNDER-20) CHAMPIONSHIPS, ESKILSTUNA, SWEDEN, 16-19 JULY 2015 - UKA have announced the final selections for GB&NI team. The following Surrey athletes have been selected:- 5000m Gus Cockle (AFD); 10000m Jack Rowe (AFD); 4x100m Theo Etienne (Hercules Wimbledon); 100m & 4x100m Imani Lansiquot (Sutton & District); 5000m Phoebe Law (Kingston & Polytechnic); High Jump Morgan Lake (WSEH) and 4x400m Nicole Kendall (Kingston & Polytechnic).
16.07.2015 - Imani sets PB in winning heat 5 of 100m. She then finishes 2nd in her semi-final to qualify for Friday's final. Jack was 8th in 10000m final.
17.07.2015 - Morgan clears her opening height of 1.79m on her third attempt to qualify for Sunday's final. Imani finished 5th in 100m final.
18.07.2015 - Gus finished 7th in 5000m final.
19.07.2015 - GOLD MEDALS FOR IMANI LANSIQUOT & MORGAN LAKE. Imani ran the 4th leg in the 4x100m relay where GB won both their heat and the final. Morgan cleared 1.91m to win the Women's High Jump final. Phoebe Law finished 14th in 5000m final.

IAAF WORLD YOUTH (U18) CHAMPIONSHIPS, CALI, COLOMBIA, 15-19 JULY 2015 - British Athletics have announced the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team. Congratulation to the following Surrey athletes who have been selected:- 100m Rechmial Miller (Hercules Wimbledon); Decathlon - Sam Talbot (Exeter H) and 100m Hurdles Hope Sarti (Guildford & Godalming).
15.07.2015 - 100M BRONZE FOR RECHMIAL MILLER. Rechmial won the UK's first medal of the championships. Hope qualifies of 100m Hurdles semi-finals on Thursday. Sam was going well in the Decathlon until disappointing High Jump followed by disqualification for a lane infringement in the 400m; however, he plans to complete the second day.
16.07.2015 - Hope finished 7th in her semi-final. Despite his disappointments on the first day Sam had a good second day with personal bests in 110m Hurdles, Pole Vault & Javelin.

SENIOR INTER-COUNTY TRACK & FIELD, CRAWLEY, SUNDAY, 12TH JULY 2015 - RESULTS.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, GATESHEAD, 10/11 JULY 2015 - Over the 2 days Surrey County athletes won 23 medals (10 Gold, 7 Silver & 6 Bronze). Paula Holguin (JG Javelin), Munroe Ritchie (SB Hammer) and Sam Mace (JB Hammer) all set Surrey County Records when winning their gold medals. Congratulations to the athletes representing Surrey Schools who, following a re-count, have been declared the winners of the overall points trophy (the Broadbridge Trophy) by 3 points over Essex Schools.

EUROPEAN UNDER-23 CHAMPIONSHIPS, TALINN, ESTONIA, 9-12 JULY 2015 - British Athletics have announced the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team. Congratulation to the following Surrey athletes who have been selected:- 800m Katie Snowden (Herne Hill) and Adelle Tracey (Guildford & Godalming); 400m Hurdles Shona Richards (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) and 4x400m Amy Allcock (Aldershot, Farnham & District).
09.07.2015 - Adelle & Katie qualify for 800m Final to be held on Saturday.
10.07.2015 - Shona wins heat to qualify for 400m Hurdles semis to be held on Saturday.
11.07.2015 - Shona sets Season's Best time of 56.99 to qualify for Sunday's Final. In the 800m Final Adelle finished 4th and Katie was 6th.
12.07.2015 - Shona finishes 4th in 400m Hurdles Final with a personal best time of 56.05.

UNDER-13 INTER-COUNTY TRACK & FIELD, KINGSMEADOW, SUNDAY, 26TH JULY 2015 - The athletes selected for the Surrey Girl's team have been announced. Any team members who have not yet replied to Marilyn Parsons are requested to do so as soon as possible. Any other Under-13 girls who wish to compete in the non-scoring 100m or 800m races, who have achieved the standard of 14.0 and 2:42.0 respectively, should also contact Marilyn before the 26th July.

SURREY ROAD LEAGUE 2015 - RESULTS & LEAGUE TABLES AFTER 3 RACES.

SURREY COUNTY 10 MILES CHAMPIONSHIPS, DORKING, 7 JUNE 2015 - RESULTS.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS UNDER-23 & UNDER-20 CHAMPIONSHIPS, BEDFORD, 20/21 JUNE 2015 - Surrey athletes were attempting to attract the attention of the selectors for the UK teams for the forthcoming European U23 & U20 Championships and the IAAF World Youth Championships. Our athletes gained 25 medals (8 Gold, 11 Silver & 6 Bronze). Morgan Lake won the U20 High Jump (equalling her existing County record) and the U20 Long Jump. Other winners were Jack Phipps (U23 PV); Katie Snowden (U23 800m); Shona Richards (U23 400m Hurdles); Phoebe Law (U20 3000m); Shirin Irving (U20 100m Hurdles) and Sophie Mace (U18 DT). SURREY UNDER-15 BOYS HAMMER RECORD - Competing at the Surrey Schools Championships held at Kingsmeadow on 13th June 2015 Sam Mace (Walton AC) set a new record for the 4kg Hammer Throw of 57.16m. This was an improvement upon the previous record of 57.05 which was set by Munroe Ritchie in September 2012. Surrey U15B Track & Field Records.
ROBIN DICKSON 1942 - 2015 - We regret to announce that Robin Dickson died on Saturday, 13th June 2015 following a short illness. We are pleased that Robin had visits in hospital from several athletes during his last days. We regret any distress caused by the premature announcement of his death on this website which was due to a misunderstanding of a report of his condition.
Robin joined Croydon Harriers in the early 1970s and represented them through to the 1990s over middle and long distances. He became first claim to Thames Hare & Hounds in 1997 and represented them in the Surrey Road Relays and the Surrey Masters Cross-Country Championships. Following his competitive career he became a succesful coach and also took on the role of Team Manager for the Surrey Senior Women's Cross-Country team. Robin was a quiet and private man who let his deeds speak for themselves. Profile.

WELL-DESERVED GONG FOR PETE MULHOLLAND - Surrey athletics guru Pete Mulholland is the recipient of an award in the Queen's Birthday honours announced today (June 13th). Pete has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) "for services to athletics in Wimbledon". The award follows his winning the England Athletics London Region Volunteer of the Year and Active Wandsworth Outstanding Services to Sport and Physical Activity awards in 2014.
Pete has been a lifelong member of Hercules Wimbledon and 2014 marked 50 years as its cross country secretary and half-a-century's involvement with athletics. Despite suffering from TB as a youngster, he took up running, was a member of Hercules Wimbledon's winning Surrey cross country team in the 1960's and has completed five marathons.
But, it's as a volunteer that he has excelled. He has taken on the job of Surrey statistician spending hours each day on his computer ensuring the county rankings are kept up to date. He also produces a weekly club newsletter with results and other information which he emails out to members all over the world. At weekends he helps out at the Wimbledon Common parkrun every Saturday morning, before going off to help out at an afternoon athletics event.
On Sunday mornings, Pete assists with track training sessions. He also helps out at Tuesday and Thursday training nights and facilitates Wednesday night road running sessions.
"Pete is an inspirational volunteer at Hercules Wimbledon and elsewhere"", says Hercules Wimbledon's secretary Sheila White. "He gives freely of his time and experience to assist in a variety of ways and is a superb model for others to follow. BILL LONG - It is with regret that we report the death of Bill Long on 29th May 2015. Before his illness Bill was a regular timekeeper at Surrey events. The funeral was held at Randalls Crematorium, Leatherhead on 1st July at 11:45am.

LONDON MINI-MARATHON, 26 APRIL 2015 - Congratulations to Katy-Ann McDonald (Blackheath & Bromley H) on winning the Under-15 Girls race where Claudia Lance-Jones (Guildford & Godalming AC) finished third.

SPORTSHALL, NATIONAL FINALS, MANCHESTER, 25/26 APRIL 2015 - Congratulations to the Surrey Under-13 Girls and Under-13 Boys who competed on Saturday. The Girls won to become the National Champions and the Boys finished second to become the runners-up. The Under-15 Girls won their event on Sunday to become National Champions and crown a brilliant weekend by Surrey's young athletes. Well done to all those involved with the team's successes.

Congratulations to all the young Surrey athletes who took part in the Sports hall finals this weekend but particularly to the U13 & U15 Girls teams on becoming National Champions and the U13 Boys team on their Silver Medal. On behalf of Surrey I would also like to thank and congratulate all the team managers and of course the coaches for their hard work.

SURREY SENIOR WOMEN HAMMER RECORD - Competing at the Kingston AC & Polytechnic H Open Throws Meeting on 11th April 2015 Pippa Wingate (Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers) set a new record for the 4kg Hammer Throw of 56.23m. This was an improvement upon the previous record of 54.57m set by Christina Bennett (Epsom & Ewell Harriers) in July 2003. Surrey SW Track & Field Records.

SURREY SENIOR MEN INDOOR TRIPLE JUMP RECORD - Currently a student at Iowa University Babatunde Amosu (Croydon Harriers) has twice this year improved upon his previous record of 15.74m set in 2014. He jumped 15.84m on 14th February and then 16.07m on 28th February at the Big 10 Indoor Championships held in Geneva, Ohio, USA. Surrey SM Indoor Records.
IAAF WORLD CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, GUIYANG, CHINA, 29TH MARCH 2015 - Jonny Hay (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) and Phoebe Law (Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers) have been selected to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland in the Senior Men's and Junior Women's races.
Jonny Hay, who was the British Team captain, finished 84th with the team coming 15th. Phoebe Law was unable to participate due to illness.
SURREY BEST TIME FOR HALF-MARATHON SET BY LILY PARTRIDGE - Continuing her strong form in recent cross-country events Lily Partridge (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) set the fastest time ever by a Surrey women for the half-marathon of 70:32 in the Reading Half-Marathon on 23rd March 2015. The event was also the England Championship for which Lily was awarded the winner's medal. List of best road performances.

SCAA AGM LEATHERHEAD, 20TH MARCH 2015 - Frances Ratchford was elected as President for the year. Thanks were given to the outgoing President, Margaret Nelson, who received a Past President badge and an engraved salver. The elections of officers resulted in only a few changes. LIST OF OFFICERS.

The AGM was the occasion when Mick Firth stood down as the Manager for the Surrey Senior & Junior Men's cross-country teams. In recognition of his long service Mick was presented with a tankard.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS U17/U15 INDOOR COMBINED EVENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS, EIS, SHEFFIELD, 14 / 15 MARCH 2015 - Sam Talbot (Exeter H) followed-up his recent victories in the individual events championships (see item below) with a victory in the Under-17 Men's Heptathlon with a score of 4939 points. Pippa Earley (Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers) gained third place in the Under-15 Girl's Pentathlon with her score of 3316 points. As the 2nd placed English competitor Pippa was awarded the Silver medal. Medal winning performances by Surrey athletes.

EUROPEAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC, 6/8 MARCH 2015 - Rosie Clarke (Epsom & Ewell H) - 1500m (Final: Sunday - no heats); Emelia Gorecka (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) - 3000m (Heats: Friday / Final: Saturday); Amy Allcock (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) - 4 x 400m Relay (Final: Sunday) and Morgan Lake (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC) - Pentathlon (Friday) have all been selected to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland.
Emelia Gorecka sets a new Surrey Record of 9:03.97 when winning Heat 2 of the 3000m. The previous record of 9:05.12 was set by Elle Baker in 2012.
Morgan Lake sets a new Surrey Record of 4527 points when finishing 9th in the Pentathlon setting 2 event PBs in the process. She set the previous record of 4448 points in January 2015.

NEW SURREY INDOOR RECORD FOR WOMEN'S 1500M - Competing in the Women's Mile at the Melrose Games held in New York on 14th February 2015, Rosie Clarke (Epsom & Ewell H) was officially timed at 1500m with 4:12.18 which improves the previous record of 4:1.:29 set by Charlotte Best (Crawley AC) in 2009. Rosie's finishing time for 1 mile was 4:31.78 which leaves the time of 4:31.24 by Jo White (Mitcham AC) in 1983 as the record for that event.

KEN NUNN - We are saddened to hear that Ken died on 3rd February following a long illness. He was awarded the Reg Bale Trophy (for Officials) by Surrey County Athletic Association at their March 2013 AGM, in recognition of the outstanding service that he had given to the County as a Field Official over many years. The funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Monday, 23rd February, at St Nicholas' Church, Cranleigh. There will then be a private cremation (for family only), following which those attending the service are invited for refreshments at Cranleigh Golf Club.
PETER LINDSELL 1946 - 2014 - We have been informed by Alan Dolton (Striders of Croydon) of the death of Peter Lindsell in November 2014 whilst he was on holiday in the Canary Islands. As a member of Guildford & Godalming AC, Peter won the Surrey 10,000m championship in 1981 and 1982. He also won the M40 Cross-Country title in 1986. By profession he was a demolition engineer and had considerable expertise in load testing and the demolition of complex structures and was a lecturer at Surrey University. More recently he lived near Southampton and spent a lot of time encouraging and helping young athletes at the Southampton track. Profile.

SURREY UNDER-13 / UNDER-15 SPORTSHALL 2014/15, SPECTRUM, GUILDFORD 25 JANUARY 2015 - RESULTS.
WORLD AGE-17 BEST FOR INDOOR PENTATHLON BY MORGAN LAKE - Whilst representing Great Britain & Northern Ireland in the U20/U23 Combined Events International held at Nogent sur Oise, France on 24/25 January 2015, Morgan Lake (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC) set a new world age-17 best of 4448 points beating the previous best held by Carolina Kluft. This was a Surrey Indoor Record beating the previous record 4297 points set by Julia Bennett in 1998. Morgan's individual preformances were 60mH: 8.85; HJ: 1.88m; SP: 13.88m; LJ: 6.13m & 800m: 2:25.44. Surrey Women's Indoor Records.
There was a Senior Combined Events International held in Apeldoorn, Netherlands over the same weekend. Jo Rowland (Crawley AC) finished 6th with 4066 points. Her individual performaces were: 60mH: 9.02; HJ: 1.65m; SP: 13.01m; LJ: 5.69m & 800m: 2:15.83.

JACK HEYWOOD 1932 - 2015 - We have been informed by Herne Hill Harriers of the death on 2nd January 2015 of Jack Heywood Jnr. Jack won Surrey Cross-Country titles as a Youth in 1949 and as a Junior in 1953. He won his first international vest in 1955 when he represented GB against France over 10,000m.
