(5) SIR CHRIS CHATAWAY 1931 - 2014
We regret to report the death of Chris Chataway, aged 82, on 19th January 2014 after suffering from cancer for two and a half years. There will be many accounts of his illustrious career as an international athlete and world record holder in the national media. What is less well known is his career as a Surrey athlete during the late 1940s and early 1950s as a member of Walton AC. In his later years he ran for Achilles Club and Thames Hare & Hounds. His SURREY PERFORMANCE PROFILE shows third places as a Junior Man in the County 880 yards final in 1949 and the County Cross-Country Championship in 1950. He won the County Senior Mile Championship in 1950.

(12) ENGLISH SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, DONINGTON PARK, LEICESTERSHIRE, 15 MARCH 2014
Saskia Millard (HHH) representing London won the Junior Girls race.
Because the county qualifications for Schools events are different from those for competitions held under UKA rules; Surrey County qualified athletes can run for "counties" other than Surrey and athletes who are not Surrey County qualified can run for Surrey. This means that it is not always possible to claim team titles for Surrey County as the following results show:- Junior Girls:- The London team which won contained 4 Surrey athletes (Saskia Millard - 1st; Alex Brown - 11th; Eloise O'Shaughnessy - 14th; Katy-Ann MacDonald - 19th). The Surrey team which came 3rd contained 5 Surrey athletes (Mollie O'Sullivan - 8th; Claudia Lance-Jones - 29th; Elsa Palmer - 40th; Bea Allan - 43rd; Eugenie Cockle - 60th). Intermediate Girls:- The Surrey team which won contained 4 Surrey County athletes (Naimh Brown - 6th; Vicki Robinson - 26th; Katie Shiel-Rankin 30th; Pippa Monk - 32nd). Senior Girls:- The Surrey team which came 2nd was 100% Surrey County athletes (Phoebe Law - 7th; Suzannah Monk - 26th; Becky Robinson - 41st; Sophie Foreman - 53rd; Stevie Lawrence - 55th; Eleanor Harrison - 58th). Senior Boys:- The Surrey team which came 2nd contained 5 Surrey County athletes (Jack Rowe - 9th; George Gathercole - 16th; Tom Holden - 18th; Daniel Wallis - 42nd; Jack Wyllie - 68th).
(13) DAVID LITTLEWOOD, MBE
Surrey vice-president David Littlewood, MBE, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, March 16th.
David, who received the England Athletics Services to Officiating Award in 2012, was one of Britain's best known athletics officials and has been involved in our sport for more than 60 years. He was a familiar figure at international meetings both at home and abroad and was UKA's representative on the IAAF Technical Committee. He was Out of Stadium Competition Director at the London Olympics and was the London marathon men's race referee for almost 30 years. He celebrated his 73rd birthday in 2010 by receiving his MBE from the Queen, awarded in recognition of his volunteer service to athletics.
He officiated at numerous Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth events and his involvement extended right across our sport and at the time of his death he had been honorary secretary of the English Schools Athletics Association, a post he held since 1992. Since 1981, he was Chairman of the British Technical Officials' Committee and Honorary Secretary of the UK Rules Revision Group with responsibility for producing the UK Athletics Rulebook every two years.
He was a lifelong member of Hercules Wimbledon AC and after serving as treasurer for a record 43 years was elected president in 2004. He never forgot the grass roots of our sport and regularly supported Surrey, club and other domestic events, international commitments permitting.
Competing at the Arthur Killbery Memorial Meeting held at Crookham Common, Newbury on 22/23 March 2014, Joey Watson (WSEH) set a new Under-20 Record for the 6kg Shot with a throw of 17.02m. This improved the previous record of 17.01m set by Michael Wheeler in 2007.

(16) REVISED SPECIFICATIONS FOR THROWING IMPLEMENTS FROM 1ST APRIL 2014
UKA have announced the specifications for the new throwing implements to be introduced from April. These changes affect Under-15 Girls and Under-17 Women and will mean that implements used in domestic competition will be the same as those used in international competition for the equivalent age groups.
(17) GERRY NORTH 1936 - 2014
Cross country international Gerry North sadly died in Portsmouth at 11.15 pm on 1 April 2014, aged 77, after a long illness.
His early career was with Blackpool & Fylde AC and Lancashire. Gerry and his younger brother Geoff moved south to London in 1962 and joined Belgrave Harriers. Whilst Geoff retained his Lancashire affiliation, Gerry, who worked as a salesman and was an agent for Asics Tiger running shoes, quickly set about winning Surrey titles on the track and country from 3 miles upwards. Gerry's best times included 14:06.1 for 5000 metres; 28:08.4 for 6 miles, 29:21.0 for 10,000 metres, and 48:38.2 for 10 miles on the track.
In his later years Gerry moved further south to Portsmouth where he took up coaching and organised many road races, including the prestigious Victory 5 Miles event. He leaves two sons David (14:37.6 for 5000m) and Andy (14:55.8) who also inherited his ability to race well over the country.
Gerry North was a gentle, approachable character who was very popular with his all distance running rivals in Britain and the county, and he will be sadly missed. David Cocksedge

Competing at the Mt. Sac Relays Meeting held in Walnut, California USA on 18 April 2014, Babatunde Amosu (Croydon Harriers) set a new Senior Triple Jump Record of 15.97m / 0.0. This improved the previous record of 15.93m set by Kola Adedoyin in 2010 (NOTE. Kola transferred his allegiance to Leicestershire in 2011 and is, therefore, no longer a Surrey athlete). This new record is under threat, not only from Babatunde but also, from Jonathan Ilori (Blackheath & Bromley) who had a wind-assisted jump of 16.10 also in the USA on April 11.
